Text of the wire copy is as follows: The nation's first inkling came Sunday, October 21st. There were reports of increasing tension in Washington. But try as they might, newsmen were unable to pin down the cause. But on Monday, October 22nd, it was announced that President Kennedy would address the nation at 7 p.m. (EST) on a matter of greatest urgency. Meanwhile, it was learned that congressional leaders had been summoned back to the capital. At 7 o'clock that Monday night, a serious-faced President Kennedy faced the television screen. He wasted no words as he outlined the evidence of atomic missile sites in Cuba. He bluntly blamed Soviet Russia which had been assuring the United States it was sending only defensive weapons to the island. Said the President: "This secret, swift and extraordinary buildup of Communist missiles in an area well known to have a special and historical relationship to the United States and the nations of the Western Hemisphere is a deliberately provocative and unjustified change in the status quo which cannot be accepted by this country, if our courage and our commitments are ever again to be trusted by either friend or foe." The President immediately ordered a quarantine on all such offensive weapons from Europe and the interception and turning back of vessels carrying them. And the tension ended with the Soviet backdown. Among the legislative highlights of John Kennedy's administration were the increase of the minimum wage from $1 to $1.25..." Curatorial Commentary

KNER-FM was a student-run radio station based in Richardson, Texas. It was established in 1955 and played primarily soft rock tunes with Southern Baptist-oriented religious programs. It was owned by Buckner Baptist Benevolences (which developed out of Buckner Orphans Home and is now an arm of Buckner Children and Family Services Dallas). It originally broadcast Sunday through Friday and was based out of the Chapel building on Buckner Blvd. in an old choir rehearsal room.
