Curator's Notes

Dorothy M. Bush was Lee Harvey Oswald's ninth grade science teacher at Beauregard Junior High School. In an oral history recorded with the Museum in 2003, she described young Lee Oswald as a distracted and mediocre student.  Bush remembered, "We had just started a unit studying the atom.  You see, that was back in the '50s. So anyway, Oswald wanted to help... we were making a little brochure and it had a little artwork on it. And he told me, he said, 'I can do that. I want to help you.' And he kept on several times, so I finally got him the material and told him, well, he could do it. But it was very messy, so it could not be used....  I remember...he talked and had to be moved, and then he could not follow directions and do the work." - Stephen Fagin, Associate Curator
