DescriptionBlack and white photograph of Dallas Times Herald photographer Eamon Kennedy with Kathey Atkinson, the young girl he photographed crying at Parkland Hospital on November 22, 1963. The picture was taken by fellow Dallas Times Herald photographer John Mazziotta. Kennedy and Atkinson are holding a copy of the Dallas Times Herald newspaper from November 23, 1963 that shows the photograph of Atkinson on the front cover.
Curatorial CommentaryAfter Kathey Atkinson's photograph appeared on the front page of the Dallas Times Herald, the paper's managing editor Felix McKnight wrote her a letter, inviting her to visit the Times Herald offices to meet the photographer who captured her in tearful prayer outside of Parkland Memorial Hospital. At the meeting -- when this photograph was taken -- Eamon Kennedy told Kathey that she "just caught his attention." According to Kathey, "He said that he saw the whole world in my eyes at that moment, and he said that he had to take the picture." - Stephen Fagin, Curator
Kathey Atkinson later wrote a book called Grief of a Nation: Kathey's Story. The book is out of print but available to researchers in the Museum's Reading Room. - Mrs. Krishna Shenoy, Librarian/Archivist
