DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Ruth Buckhanan. A life-long professional quilter, Miss Buckhanan produced numerous handmade John F. Kennedy memorial quilts after the assassination in 1963.
Interview conducted at Miss Buckhanan's home on February 20, 2003 by Arlinda Abbott and Stephen Fagin. The interview is thirty-two minutes long.
Curatorial CommentaryOne of Miss Buckhanan's Kennedy memorial quilts is part of the collection of The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza (2003.002.0001). In 2003, it was briefly displayed on the sixth floor as part of a local "Quilt Mania" event coordinated by the Quilter's Guild of Dallas. Miss Buckhanan, who had rarely visited Dallas in her life, made a trip from her home in Whitesboro, Texas, to see this special exhibit. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
One of Ruth Buckhanan's memorial quilts is in our collections and in early 2012 was on display at the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts, in an exhibit titled, "Campaigns & Commemoratives: Quilts for Presidents." - Lindsey Richardson, Curator of Collections
