A Pulitzer Prize-winning political reporter for the Associated Press for more than forty years, Mears covered every presidential election from 1960 to 2000. He spent time with Senator John F. Kennedy on the campaign trail and later attended Kennedy press conferences as well as the Kennedy funeral in 1963. Mears wrote the book "The Kennedy Brothers" (2009).
Interview conducted via telephone on August 27, 2010 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is forty-eight minutes long.
Curatorial CommentaryFollowing this 2010 audio oral history, Walter R. Mears visited The Sixth Floor Museum in September 2013. At that time, he recorded a video oral history and participated in two public programs, one of which may be viewed here on the Museum's YouTube channel: Living History with Walter Mears (youtube.com).
Mears, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1977 for his coverage of the 1976 presidential campaign, passed away on March 3, 2022. Two of his books may be found here in the Museum's Library Collection: Bibliovation | Catalog Search Results. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
