DescriptionVideotaped public program entitled "JFK & LBJ: The Evolution of Presidential Legacies," featuring Dr. Sidney Milkis, professor of governance and foreign affairs at the University of Virginia; Alan C. Lowe, director of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum (2009-2016); and Mark Updegrove, president and CEO of the LBJ Foundation. In honor of Presidents Day 2011, this panel discussion examined the changing nature of presidential legacies. The program, presented in partnership with the John G. Tower Center for Political Studies at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, was moderated by Dr. Dennis M. Simon, professor of political science at SMU. Public program recorded at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on February 23, 2011. The program is one hour and two minutes long.

Curatorial Commentary

Panelist Mark Updegrove, who was director of the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library from 2009 to 2017, is currently president and CEO of the LBJ Foundation. In addition to this 2011 program, he also participated in a 2022 program at The Sixth Floor Museum based on his book, Incomparable Grace: JFK in the Presidency (2022).

Dr. Dennis M. Simon, who moderated this 2011 panel discussion, returned to the Museum for two educator workshops. He gave a 2011 lecture on the cultural impact of presidents who died while in office and a 2013 lecture on civil rights in Dallas. Curatorial Commentary

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza partnered again with the John G. Tower Center for Political Studies at Southern Methodist University in February 2012 for the program, "The Vital South and Presidential Elections, 1960-2012." That program featured political scientist brothers Dr. Earl Black of Rice University and Dr. Merle Black of Emory University. The program was again moderated by Dr. Dennis M. Simon.
