DescriptionOriginal 35mm color slide on Kodak Ektachrome Transparency Film taken by local amateur photographer Anita Hansen showing crowds in downtown Dallas during a parade held for visiting Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy on September 13, 1960. The photographer stood on Akard Street in between Wood Street and Young Street, looking south toward Young Street. A marching band proceeds down Akard Street following the passage of the campaign car containing John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.
Curatorial CommentaryThe marching band seen in this photograph is the Mighty Maroon Band from Mesquite High School in Mesquite, Texas, a suburb east of downtown Dallas. Although our uniforms had changed slightly by the 1990s, I too was a member of this band a few decades after this photograph was taken. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
