DescriptionOriginal 35mm color slide on Kodak Kodachrome Transparency Film taken by local amateur photographer Anita Hansen showing crowds lined up in downtown Dallas during a parade held for visiting Republican presidential candidate Richard Nixon on September 12, 1960. The photographer stood on Akard Street near the northwest corner of the intersection with Jackson Street, looking north toward Commerce Street. Crowds line both sides of Akard Street as well as the balcony of the Baker Hotel and in front of the Adolphus Hotel on Commerce Street while the Kilgore Rangerettes marche south on Akard Street.
Curatorial CommentaryPhotographer Anita Hansen returned to this same location on the following day, September 13, 1960, to witness a similar parade featuring Senator John F. Kennedy and his running mate, Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson. In fact, the Kilgore Rangerettes, seen in this photo, also marched in Senator Kennedy's parade the following day.
The Kilgore Rangerettes, from Kilgore College in east Texas, started in 1940 and are known as "the first precision dance team in the world." The Rangerettes continue to perform to the present day. In the early 1960s, the length of their uniform skirts - shortened to above the knee since the program's inception in 1940 - was a subject of some local controversy. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
