DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Scott Newell. Newell was inspired by news coverage of the Kennedy assassination to become a journalist. In the 1990s, while working as a senior field productor for the television series "A Current Affair," he did several assassination-related stories, including the first on-camera interview with one of the infamous "three tramps" arrested in Dealey Plaza following the Kennedy assassination. Interview conducted at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on August 16, 2012 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is twenty-four minutes long.
Curatorial Commentary
A Current Affair, a nationally syndicated television news magazine series, aired for ten years from 1986 to 1996. It was one of several news magazine TV shows that gained popularity in the early 1990s, along with Hard Copy and Inside Edition. After the 1991 Oliver Stone film JFK reinvigorated the Kennedy assassination debate, all three programs aired various stories related to the assassination, particularly in 1992 and 1993, leading up to the 30th anniversary of the tragedy. Scott Newell spent five years working as a senior field producer at A Current Affair. The program that featured the first on-camera interview with Harold Doyle, one of the so-called "three tramps" arrested in Dealey Plaza following the assassination, aired on February 25, 1992. That episode achieved the highest ratings in A Current Affair history. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
