Curatorial CommentaryHenry Holt and Company, a New York-based book publishing company, was established in 1866. In 1960 it merged with Rinehart & Company of New York and the John C. Winston Company of Philadelphia to become Holt, Rinehart & Winston. They had a regional office in the Texas School Book Depository building at the time of the Kennedy assassination in 1963. - Stephanie Allen-Givens, Collections and Exhibits Manager
Holt, Rinehart & Winston notably published the first major conspiracy book on the Kennedy assassination, the influential and controversial Rush to Judgment by attorney Mark Lane, in 1966. The company also published Lane's follow-up book, A Citizen's Dissent [1968], as well as researcher Henry Hurt's Reasonable Doubt [1985]. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson selected Holt, Rinehart & Winston as publisher of his 1971 memoir, The Vantage Point: Perspectives of the Presidency, 1963-1969. -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
