A reporter for the New York Herald Tribune in 1963, Carroll covered the scene at Dallas police headquarters following the Kennedy assassination and witnessed the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24, 1963. He returned to Dallas a few months later to cover the 1964 Jack Ruby trial. Later that year, Carroll co-wrote attorney Melvin Belli’s controversial memoir about the case, Dallas Justice (1964). He later authored the book, Accidental Assassin (2013).
