The photograph was taken by Helmut Wolff. A native of Germany, Mr. Wolff and his family moved to Dallas in 1936. Wolff was standing at the corner of Harwood and Live Oak streets on November 22, 1963, where he took a series of still photographs as the Kennedy motorcade passed by.
This image shows Mrs. Kennedy smiling to the crowd from the back seat of the presidential limousine. Governor John Connally and his wife Nellie can be seen riding in the jump seat in front of Mrs. Kennedy, and President Kennedy faces away from the viewer, looking toward the crowd on the other side of the street.
Curatorial CommentaryA native of Germany, Wolff and his family escaped the Holocaust and immigrated to Dallas in 1936. Standing at the corner of Harwood and Live Oak Streets, he took a series of nine photographs of the Kennedy motorcade in Dallas on November 22, 1963. He donated those images to the Museum in 2016. In addition, Mr. Wolff recorded an oral history in 2013 and participated in a Living History educational program in 2019 which may be viewed on the Museum's YouTube channel: Living History with Helmut Wolff - YouTube.
