DescriptionOriginal 35mm color slide taken by Charles L. Bronson while standing on a pedestal in Dealey Plaza at the southwest corner of Main and Houston streets. This is the first of two still photographs taken on Saturday, November 23, 1963, and was taken from the same location, the concrete pedestal at the southwest corner of Main and Houston Streets, where Bronson witnessed the assassination the previous day. The image shows the Texas School Book Depository building, the Dal-Tex Building, the Dallas County Records Building, and the fountains and obelisk in Dealey Plaza the afternoon following the assassination, Saturday, November 23, 1963. Only the southeast corner of the Texas School Book Depository building is visible in the image; a tree on the left edge of the image is covering up most of the first through sixth floors of the building and the obelisk in Dealey Plaza obscures the outside corner of the building. The sixth floor corner window is visible in this image. A small portion of the Hertz sign on the roof of the building is visible in the far upper left corner of the image. Curatorial Commentary

On the afternoon following the assassination, Saturday, November 23, 1963, Bronson and his wife, Frances, returned to Dealey Plaza, accompanied by their daughter Charlette. There Bronson took two additional still photographs from atop the same concrete pedestal where he had witnessed the assassination the day before. He also finished up his roll of film by filming additional scenes from around Dealey Plaza, capturing images of the surrounding buildings and floral tributes and memorials. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
