DescriptionNotecard with information compiled by the Dallas County District Attorney's Office about Douglas Sowell, who was selected to serve on the Jack Ruby trial jury. The white unlined notecard has text typed in black: "No. 77 DOUGLAS JEWELL SOWELL, [address], Dallas, Texas. Born 1930, San Augustine, Texas. Attended Broaddus High School but did not graduate. Later received diploma G.E.D. Test. Employed by Braniff Airways since 5-53 as inspector. US. Air Force from 5-46 to 12-52. Honorable discharge. Trade satisfactory. No suits or judgments. 2 dependents. Wife Bernice." This object was originally part of the evidence collected by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and specifically prosecutors Henry Wade and Bill Alexander during the investigation leading up to the Jack Ruby trial for the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald.
Curatorial Commentary
Douglas Sowell, Juror #5 in the Jack Ruby trial, passed away in Greenville, Texas, on April 19, 2009. He was eighty years old. A 1998 audio interview about his experiences during the trial is part of the Museum's Dr. John Mark Dempsey Collection. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
In order to ensure its long-term care and preservation and to facilitate public access, the Dallas County District Attorney's Office placed their Jack Ruby Trial Collection (sometimes referred to as "the DA's Jack Ruby file") on long-term loan with The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in 2017. The Museum is working to make the entire collection accessible through this online collections database.
