DescriptionHandmade cardboard sign welcoming President Kennedy to Love Field, carried by Dallas high school student Jan Sittel on November 22, 1963. The cardboard sign states "All the Way with Jack! Grass Roots Dem." in black marker with "Grass Roots Dem." underlined in red marker on a light blue background.
Curatorial CommentaryThis sign is visible in a famous black and white photograph taken by photographer Tom C. Dillard from The Dallas Morning News, also part of the Museum's permanent collection (1994.003.0005.0001). In the photograph, you can see Jan Sittel leaning against the chain link fence at Love Field airport holding the sign, which is attached to a wooden pole.
A Living History educational program featuring high school student Jan Sittel and her lifelong friend, Dr. Betty Duke-Ruhd, can be viewed in full on the Museum's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQRSB8Ht7_8. -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
