DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Dick J. Reavis. An author and journalist, Reavis became active with the NAACP in 1963 while attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock. In 1965, he was one of the only white southerners who volunteered for the Summer Community Organizing and Political Education (SCOPE) project of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Reavis later became active with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and protested the Vietnam War. Interview conducted via Zoom on December 2, 2021 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is one hour and thirty-four minutes long.
Curatorial Commentary
As of 2022, Reavis is associate professor of English at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where he joined faculty in 2004. In addition to teaching, Reavis was also an editor at Texas Monthly Magazine (1981-1990) and later a senior reporter at the San Antonio Express-News (2000-2003). -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
