DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Roland L. Freeman. A self-taught, award-winning photo documentarian, Freeman was inspired to pursue photography after attending the 1963 March on Washington. In 1968, he covered riots in Washington, D.C. following the death of Dr. King and the mule train from Mississippi to Washington during the Poor People’s Campaign. Freeman, whose work has been extensively published and exhibited over the years, later co-directed the Mississippi Folklife Project for the Smithsonian Institution.
Interview conducted over Zoom on May 10, 2022 by Curator Stephen Fagin. The interview is 1 hour and 47 minutes long.
Curatorial CommentaryThe Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans presented a special photo exhibition, "Roland L. Freeman - Portfolio," between March 27 and September 5, 2021.
