A noted mediator and author, Cloke became active in the Civil Rights Movement while attending the University of California, Berkeley. He organized a local CORE chapter, recruited for the 1961 Freedom Rides and later volunteered for the 1964 Freedom Summer project. Cloke was also active in the anti-Vietnam War and Free Speech movements. As an organizer and law student director of the National Lawyers Guild, he helped provide legal aid to servicemen and civilians avoiding the Vietnam War.
