At age six, Sutherland saw the Kennedy motorcade at the corner of Lemmon Avenue and Turtle Creek Boulevard. His late father, Dr. Dan Sutherland, was a longtime conservative activist in Dallas and friends with Congressman Bruce Alger and Major General Edwin Walker. Dr. Sutherland, who protested during Adlai Stevenson’s visit to the city in October 1963, was involved with the anti-Kennedy advertisement that appeared in The Dallas Morning News on November 22, 1963.
