Curatorial Commentary

Although one might suspect from the somber cover that this entire issue of Life Magazine was devoted to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., because of publication deadlines only seven of its one-hundred-plus pages chronicle the life and death of Dr. King. It was in the following week's issue (April 19, 1968) that Life devoted an editorial to his legacy and more than a dozen pages to the King funeral and assassination aftermath.

The remainder of this April 12, 1968, issue includes stories about President Lyndon Johnson, Democratic presidential candidates Robert Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy and the rock group, The Doors. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
