DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Gary DeLaune. The police reporter for radio station KLIF in Dallas, DeLaune covered the events of that weekend, and on Sunday, he was standing next to photographer Bob Jackson when Jackson took his Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald.
Interview recorded at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on October 21, 1998 by Bob Porter. The interview is fifty-eight minutes long.
Curatorial CommentaryAlthough Gary DeLaune is best remembered for his breathless report of the Oswald shooting on KLIF Radio in Dallas, he subsequently became a noteworthy and beloved broadcaster in San Antonio, working for several decades at KENS-TV. He also was the voice of local high school football games in San Antonio for decades, continuing right up until a few months prior to his death at the age of 88 on February 6, 2022. The Museum enjoyed a warm relationship with Mr. DeLaune for several years. In addition to this 1998 oral history, he returned to the Museum for a panel discussion about the Oswald shooting on November 10, 2012 (Oswald Has Been Shot! - YouTube). I also had the great honor of visiting with Mr. DeLaune at his home in San Antonio on two occasions - to record an updated oral history on February 4, 2012, and returning the next year to record an interview with his wife, Jo Taylor DeLaune, a onetime nurse at St. Paul Hospital in Dallas, on April 20, 2013. -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
