DescriptionVideotaped oral history with Edward Harris. A vocal African American activist in Dallas, Harris fought for civil rights during the 1960s with local organizations such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. In 1968, he attended the National Black Power Conference in Philadelphia.
Interview conducted at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on February 6, 2006 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is fifty-nine minutes long.
Curatorial CommentaryEd Harris passed away in 2015. In addition to this 2006 oral history, he participated in a Museum public program later that same year, entitled, "Call to Action: The SNCC Experience in Dallas," where he reunited with his friends, Ernest McMillan and Bishop Mark Herbener, to discuss their local activism during the Civil Rights Movement. In 2009, Mr. Harris self-published his autobiography, In the Shadow of Big D, that chronicled his experiences with the Civil Rights Movement in and beyond Dallas. The Museum has a copy of this book in our Reading Room. -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
