DescriptionVideotaped program entitled "Call to Action: An Evening with Vivian Castleberry," featuring noted Dallas journalist and women's rights activist Vivian Castleberry. Considered the "grandmother of women journalists in Dallas," Castleberry was the longtime editor of women's news at the Dallas Times Herald. On the day of the Kennedy assassination, she was waiting at the Dallas Trade Mart to cover First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy's visit to the city. She wrote several human-interest stories that weekend. This career overview lecture includes introductory remarks by Sixth Floor Museum staff Nicola Longford and Stephen Fagin. This public program was part of the Museum's 2006 "Call to Action" series.
Program conducted at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza on August 2, 2006. The program is one hour and twenty-one minutes long.
Curatorial CommentaryVivian Castleberry passed away on October 4, 2017. A longtime friend of The Sixth Floor Museum, she participated in several interviews and programs over the years, including a lengthy 2004 oral history (Vivian Castleberry Oral History – Works – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza) and a 2008 Living History program (Living History with Vivian Castleberry). Castleberry's daughter, Carol Tate, also recorded an oral history in 2004, which may be accessed here: Carol Tate Oral History – Works – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
This "Call to Action" public program series, launched to explore the Kennedy legacy within the context of Dallas social activism, coincided with the special exhibit, "Call to Action," that ran at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza from April to October 2006. Like the program series, the exhibit touched on local social activism in civil rights, gay rights, women's rights and disability rights. All "Call to Action" programs may also be viewed in full on the Museum's YouTube channel. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
