DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Lu Mitchell. A Dallas-based songwriter and folk singer for more than 45 years, Mitchell performed at numerous civil rights and peace movement rallies, including vigils held in Dealey Plaza. She saw the presidential motorcade as it exited Dallas Love Field and later that weekend wrote a poignant ballad in memory of President Kennedy.
Interview conducted at Ms. Mitchell's home on May 13, 2008 by Stephen Fagin, Associate Curator. The interview is fifty-six minutes long.
Curatorial CommentaryDuring this oral history, Ms. Mitchell performed several of the protest songs that she wrote for anti-Vietnam War rallies in the Dallas area. She also put to music and performed for the first time the lyrics she wrote during the weekend of the assassination in memory of President Kennedy. She is the first person to sing during an oral history interview with The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. - Stephen Fagin, Associate Curator
