DescriptionBlack and white negative on Kodak Safety Film taken by Bill Winfrey of the Dallas Morning News. Image shows Texas Governor John Connally and his wife Nellie on the tarmac of Love Field airport about 5 months after the Kennedy assassination. Nellie Connally carries a book titled "Dallas Public and Private" by Warren Leslie.
Curatorial CommentaryPublished in early 1964, Warren Leslie's Dallas Public and Private: Aspects of an American City was an intense cultural and political study of the city of Dallas immediately before the Kennedy assassination. It examined the city's political climate as well as the steps taken by law enforcement officials to ensure that President and Mrs. Kennedy received a warm welcome in 1963. For researchers and historians, it is an invaluable primary resource in understanding the context of the time period. After many years out of print, the book was reprinted by Southern Methodist University Press in 1998. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
