DescriptionVintage postcard bought in the 1960s showing downtown Dallas from the west, just past the Triple Underpass. The Texas School Book Depository Building can be seen on the left, as well as the Dal-Tex building, the Dallas County Criminal Courts building, the Dallas County Records Building and the Old Red Courthouse. The Hertz sign is visible on top of the Texas School Book Depository building, and Dealey Plaza can be seen past the Triple Underpass. The text on the back of the postcard reads: "Triple Underpass Dallas Texas Showing the Texas School Book Depository Building (Hertz sign on roof), where bullet was fired that killed President Kennedy. Then, showing left to right: Hall of Records Building, old Courthouse, and new Courthouse. Underpass on left is the one the Kennedy caravan passed through en route to Parkland Hospital, where the President died. Curatorial Commentary
At the time of the assassination, Chevrolet sponsored the iconic Hertz Rent-a-Car time and temperature billboard atop the Texas School Book Depository building. By the time this photograph was taken, a couple of years following the assassination, billboard sponsorship of the sign had changed to Ford. When the Hertz sign was dismantled in May 1979, the original Chevrolet sponsorship plate was found to be still in place, simply covered up by the Ford plate. -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
