DescriptionOriginal 35mm black and white negative taken by Dallas Times Herald and United Press International photographer Darryl Heikes showing the site at 404 E. Tenth Street where Officer J.D. Tippit was shot and killed in Oak Cliff, about 45 minutes after the assassination of President Kennedy. Witnesses and investigators stand near a parked car. A crime scene investigator's kit is visible in the lower right corner of the image.
Curatorial Commentary
This image, taken on the south side of Tenth Street in Oak Cliff, shows Officer Tippit’s squad car and investigators.  Over the years, virtually all the houses on both sides of Tenth have been torn down and new homes built in their place.  On November 20, 2012, the Texas Historical Commission unveiled a State Historical Marker just behind the north curb (across the street from where the car is parked in this photo) to designate the historical significance of the site. – Gary Mack, Curator
