DescriptionWindow with a wood frame and four panes of glass from the Texas School Book Depository building. The wooden window frame is painted dark green on one side, and the other side is raw wood. The muntins, the narrow pieces of wood that divide the window into four separate panes, are also painted green. The window is 37" H x 40 3/4" W x 1 3/4" D. The window likely originates from the north side of the sixth floor near the freight elevators.
Curatorial Commentary

During 1988 construction of the Visitors Center and exterior elevator shaft for The Sixth Floor exhibit, the center window on the north side of the sixth floor was removed to accommodate a sky bridge or hyphen, connecting the external elevator shaft to the Depository building. Museum expansion in 2001 saw the removal of the center window on the north side of the seventh floor as well.

This particular window is likely the one removed from the sixth floor in the spring of 1988. Dallas County had, in fact, replaced all but the sixth floor windows during renovations in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Though plans originally called for all of the building's windows to be replaced, historian Conover Hunt, who served as project manager during the development of The Sixth Floor exhibit, successfully argued that the original sixth floor windows should remain in place, since most dated back to at least 1963. -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
