In 2013, Joseph H. Carter, Sr. authored the short memoir, I Heard JFK's Death Shots. The Museum has print and electronic copies of this publication in our Library Collection: Bibliovation | Details for I heard JFK's death shots.
I first met Mr. Carter when he and his wife, Michelle, visited Dallas at the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination in 2013. He very kindly agreed to this on-the-spot oral history and presented the Museum with a print copy of his recently-published memoir. We met again almost exactly ten years later in November 2023 when, as one of the few surviving journalists who covered President Kennedy's trip to Texas in 1963, Carter was asked to participate in multiple news interviews at the 60th anniversary. Joe and Michelle happened to stop by the Museum during the installation of our special exhibit, Two Days in Texas, on the seventh floor. I had the honor of giving them a behind-the-scenes look during that installation, surprising him with an up-close viewing of the original White House Press bus banner, taken from the side of the bus that Joe Carter was aboard during the Dallas motorcade.
