DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Dr. Clayborne Carson. Professor emeritus of history at Stanford University, Carson was selected by Coretta Scott King to edit and publish the papers of her late husband. He served as founding director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford and authored several books, including In Struggle: SNCC and the Black Awakening of the 1960s (1981). As an activist with SNCC, Carson attended the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. Interview conducted over Zoom on April 23, 2021 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is fifty-six minutes long.
Curatorial Commentary
Dr. Carson's academic work on Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement has been recognized with more than twenty awards since 1977. In addition to contributing to nearly two dozen publications, he was the senior academic advisor on the landmark PBS fourteen-part documentary series, Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Movement (1987-1990). He was also co-editor of The Eyes on the Prize Civil Rights Reader (1991). -- Stephen Fagin, Curator
