DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Dr. Carlos Muñoz Jr. A native of El Segundo Barrio in El Paso, Muñoz was a founding leader of the Chicano civil rights movement and a friend of Cesar Chavez. Author of several pioneering works about the Mexican American experience, including the award-winning "Youth, Identity, Power: The Chicano Movement" (1989), Muñoz is professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. Interview conducted via Zoom on June 3, 2021 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is forty-six minutes long.
Curatorial Commentary
As of 2025, Dr. Muñoz is professor emeritus of Chicanx Latinx studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was the founding chair of the first Chicano Studies department. His seminal 1989 work, Youth, Identity, Power: The Chicano Movement, won the Gustavus Myers Book Award and was a major resource for the PBS television series, Chicano! History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement (1996) and the HBO original movie, Walkout (2006). - Stephen Fagin, Curator
