DescriptionDallas County Deputy Sheriff's silver badge carried by Luke Mooney, the deputy sheriff credited with discovering the "sniper's perch" on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository. Badge reads "Deputy Sheriff Dallas County 325 Texas."
Curatorial CommentaryOn a visit to The Sixth Floor Museum in 2006, Mr. Mooney noticed a special display of the suit worn by his friend Dallas police detective James Leavelle at the time of the Oswald shooting. Shortly thereafter, Mooney decided to donate the clothes and hat he was wearing when he discovered the "sniper's perch" on the sixth floor of the Depository, along with his wallet, badge, gun belt and firearms.
Mr. Mooney recorded an oral history with the Museum on December 4, 2002, and later participated in three videotaped programs, recorded between 2006 and 2010. He passed away on December 3, 2010. - Stephen Fagin, Associate Curator
