DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Adlene Harrison. The first female mayor of Dallas (1976) and later the first chairman of Dallas Area Rapid Transit (1981-1986), Harrison was the only female member of the City of Dallas Planning Commission in 1963. She and her husband attended the luncheon at the Dallas Trade Mart on the day of the assassination. Interview conducted at Ms. Harrison's home on September 10, 2009 by Stephen Fagin, Associate Curator. The interview is one hour and nine minutes long.
Curatorial Commentary
Although historically considered the first female mayor Dallas, Adlene Harrison was not elected to that position. When Mayor Wes Wise (1971-76) resigned from office to run, unsucessfully, for U.S. Congress in 1976, Harrison briefly became the city's acting mayor. By the end of that year, Robert Folsom (1976-81) had been elected mayor. Several years later, with fifty-six percent of the vote, Annette Strauss (1987-91) became the first woman elected to the office of mayor of Dallas. - Stephen Fagin, Associate Curator
