DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Lynn Goldberg. As a high school student, Goldberg attended the 1963 March on Washington. She later participated in the SCOPE voter registration project of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and spent the summer of 1965 in South Carolina. Her late husband served in the Vietnam War.
Interview conducted via Zoom on August 16, 2023 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is fifty-five minutes long.
Curatorial Commentary
The diary mentioned in the interview was gifted by Lynn Goldberg to Brandeis University as part of Robert D. Farber University Archives and Special Collections. This incredible piece of history includes experiences she faced as a member of SCOPE in the south. She shares her attendance at a speech by Martin Luther King Jr; the harassment she and others faced by white citizens, connections she made with the communities she visited, and the obstacles that young civil rights workers faced daily. The Summer Community Organizing and Political Education (SCOPE) project of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was an ambitious undertaking in the summer of 1965 in preparation of the passage of the Voting Rights Act in August 1965. Hundreds of predominantly white college students were recruited to travel to six southern states to coordinate with community groups, promote voter registration, and document voter suppression.
