DescriptionAudio oral history interview with Shelia Fernley. A Fort Worth native, Fernley turned nine years old two days before the assassination. Her late father, Jesse Herrera, worked at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram at the time and was inspired in part by President Kennedy to become involved with LULAC, the American GI Forum of Texas and other organizations.
Interview conducted by telephone on November 2, 2020 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is thirty-nine minutes long.
Curatorial CommentaryAs discussed during this oral history, President and Mrs. Kennedy briefly attended a League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) convention at the Rice Hotel in Houston on the evening of November 21, 1963. Two LULAC members who attended that event recorded oral histories with the Museum, Frank Velasco (Frank Velasco Oral History – Search Velasco (Objects) – Search – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza) and Roy Botello (Roy R. Botello Oral History – Search Botello (Objects) – Search – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza). Roy Botello's 8mm home movie from that evening may be viewed here: Roy Botello film – Search Botello (Objects) – Search – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
