DescriptionVideotaped oral history interview with Dr. Thomas N. Gardner. As a freshman at the University of Virginia in 1964, Gardner became active in the Civil Rights Movement and participated in the final part of the Selma to Montgomery march on March 25, 1965. He was involved in numerous labor, civil rights, and anti-Vietnam War protests throughout the South and served as chairman of the Southern Student Organizing Committee from 1967 to 1969. Interview conducted via Zoom on July 20, 2021 by Stephen Fagin. The interview is one hour and twenty minutes long.
Curatorial Commentary

In addition to Dr. Gardner, the Museum has recorded interviews with a number of people who took part in or were involved in some way with the 1965 Selma to Montgomery march, including Ruth Gramolini (Ruth Gramolini Oral History – Works – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza), Bruce Hartford (Bruce Hartford Oral History – Works – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza), and the Rev. In addition to Dr. Gardner, the Museum has recorded oral histories with two other activists who were affiliated with the Southern Student Organizing Committee in the 1960s: Doy Gorton (Doy Gorton Oral History – Works – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza) and Gene Guerrero (Gene Guerrero Oral History – Works – The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza). Guerrero was the committee's first chairman and Gardner was the fifth and final chairman, serving from 1967 until the breakup of the organization in 1969. - Stephen Fagin, Curator
