In 2004, Phenix co-authored When the News Went Live with three of his former KRLD-TV colleagues: Bob Huffaker, Bill Mercer and Wes Wise. This charming quartet of veteran journalists participated in a number of panel discussions across Texas in support of the book, including multiple programs at The Sixth Floor Museum. With the passing of Bill Mercer in 2025, all four of the authors are now deceased.
